Wow...London was a trip! My roots are firmly based in London (although I was born in Devon) but I always forget how much I love the place until I go back...and then I fall in love with it all over again. However, I really dislike the traffic or maybe I'm just getting older. We had a packed four days planned but getting to and from places took so long we only got to do the 'big' things. Our hotel was basic but clean and comfortable. The Donmar's Henry IV was amazing and the all female cast rocked the performance particularly the actress Ashley McGuire who played Falstaff. She had me crying with laughter one moment then shrinking back in fear during a latter scene. We came out of that performance knowing we had witnessed something special. Saturdays big thing was at the Shepherds Bush Empire to see Tina Dico in concert and it was quite frankly...awesome. I know some hate that word but I don't care...it adequately describes the evening. We even got to see Bond Streets Christmas lights on the way back to the hotel afterwards. On Sunday we took a stroll to the British Museum to view the Ancient Lives, New Discoveries exhibit. I was completely fascinated with the eight lives they had pieced together and was surprised by how emotional I became. We also enjoyed a stroll around Soho and Carnaby Street...well you just have too. Sadly all this fun had an impact on my body so rest is on the cards for the next few days...well...when I've achieved some minimal cooking time. We also have our good friend Ann staying with us whilst she heals after some surgery so its Ouches and Expletive Therapy for the next week or so. It's necessary...it helps speed up healing...true story..as does laughter and thankfully we do a lot of that too.

So to today's recipe...and I know, I know!..it's another soup recipe. But I do eat a lot of soup and especially so, when the days are colder and my kitchen time is limited. I am always floored by how a few simple ingredients can make a great tasting and satisfying meal. I wanted to make a nutritious and comforting soup for myself and Ann for lunch. I had a 1kg celeriac root begging to be used and that was that! 20 minutes later...Ann was slowly making her way through a serving. The flavours are deeply savoury with a cleanness to them. I'm not usually a pureed soup fan but it felt right to blend the veggies, beans and stock together to make a thickly delicious soup. Ann loved it...I loved it and the good news is we can enjoy it again tomorrow too! This makes four thick portions of soup or you could add a little more stock or water to thin it down to make servings for 6-8. The choice, as always, is entirely yours folks.

Rocket & Roses Celeriac & Sunflower Soup (vegan, gluten-free & LF)

Rocket & Roses Celeriac & Sunflower Soup    Serves 4
(Original recipe from the Rocket & Roses Vegan Kitchen)

1 tsp rapeseed/canola oil or water to steam saute
1 med/lg white onion, finely chopped
2" piece of fresh ginger root, micro-grated with juice
3 cloves garlic, micro-grated
1 14oz tin of Cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
1 kg celeriac root, peeled and cubed
3 1/2 cups hot low sodium veggie stock or water, plus extra if you wish to thin
1 heaped tbsp fresh flat leaf parsley, finely chopped
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
small handful of raw sunflower seeds, plus extra for topping (optional)

In a soup pan gently heat the oil and add the onions, garlic and ginger. Over a low heat, cover and cook the onion mix until it has softened. Approx 5 minutes..stirring often to prevent sticking.

Add the celeriac and beans and stir well to coat in the onion mixture and leave to cook for 2 minutes, stirring once.

Add the stock, parsley, lemon juice and season generously with freshly cracked black pepper and a pinch of low sodium salt. (Latter is optional) Stir well and cover and bring to a boil, stir in the sunflower seeds, reduce the heat to a simmer and replace the lid. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the celeriac is tender when tested. Remove from the heat and blend until smooth and creamy. Adding more hot stock/water to the soup if you want a thinner soup. Serve...

Enjoy!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope your weekend was a good one and your week has started well...

~Red~

NB: This is my creation and I have no problem with you using the recipe or sharing it. I only ask you give credit where it's due via links back to this posting. Many thanks...~R~

So I thought I'd just share with you a few things that I usually have pinned up on my boards in my office...(nearly packed up and empty office..*sob* lol)

Sadly its true..sometimes when all the meds and painkillers aren't working...music is the only thing that gets me through those long nights...but am I ever thankful for it.

A recent convert to Pink Floyd thanks mainly to Trustworthy. Such a great lyric...and great photo...in my opinion.

Yes...no passport needed. Pure escapism...I can disappear into the music world and set up camp and stay there for however long I want to. I'd be truly lost without it.

The others were so serious that I had to end with a funny..but blimey is it pink?! lol. Need sunglasses. But I agree everyone has their guilty pleasure musically. I know I certainly have and no...I will not give it up so don't ask! lol.

We are heading out for an adventure with my sister and her little ones. There was talk of me helping M with his math homework...poor boy. lol Then we heading to a Wacky Warehouse so the little ones can play off some energy.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope your Saturday is a fantastic one.

In Buddhism, there is a beautiful symbolism present in the blossom of a Lotus Flower. In nature, the Lotus, which is known for its delicate beauty, blooms forth from the blackest of mud and deepest depths. The Lotus therefore, represents the human struggle to rise up from the "mud"of our existence and blossom into the beautiful, spiritual person that we are. It is a symbol of rebirth, renewal, and overcoming the darkness in our lives. Fire is symbolic of cleansing... starting over. In nature, fire destroys all that it touches, making room for new growth. It is an end to the old and a beginning of what is to come.

Happy Saturday folks! Today I wanted to share with you one of my favourite flowers. Not only is it beautiful to look at but the meaning behind the symbolism is awesome. And I as I couldn't explain it better myself I left it to Mr Salerno to eloquently do so above. lol. There have been times in my life I have felt the need for Rebirth..one of them right now actually...so the lotus is a symbol of starting anew and that all important symbol of Hope.

I am very much a Fire sign and to some of you that won't be a surprise. lol. So have always accepted that fire is my element. For healing I have always felt at peace next to the water but just as much near a fire be it the cosy coal fires, fire pits or bonfires...and my preferred beach fires. I get both in one go then..lol. Perfect.

Someday, soon I hope, I want to have a fire lotus tattoo so I can carry this beautiful symbolism with me. It's part of who I am and my life story.

I found this design and it could be a contender....

....but then so could this one...I am confident 'when' (see confidence and hope at work there!)..the day finally comes I will have found the perfect design. To see other designs I've posted about simply click here..

Artist ~ Toni Carmine Salerno
And of course there is the all calming yoga lotus...

I love the colour in this image...that peaceful calm in amongst the fire of the sky and reflections in the water. Perfect.

Recently I found this short piece of piano music on YouTube...I'm including it in today's post because its called The Lotus Flower...and its a very gentle and calming piece of music. And when I can work out how to get it from YouTube to my Pod I will use it for much needed moments of calm. lol. Hope you enjoy it too..

New Age Piano ~ The Lotus Flower

So that's it for today. Thank you for stopping by and I hope your Saturday is a fantastic one.

Honestly its almost like a geek convention my life! And thankfully the geeks that I love are a good bunch and don't hold my non-geekness against me as I couldn't even pretend to be in touch with my geekside. I may come out with the odd comment or quote that gets me geek points...but that is about it.

uh huh..sure do!

It's my love and respect for these folks that has me joining in on the geek holiday of May the Fourth Be With You day...*eye rolls* lol. And I have chosen to share something that fits both of the worlds...the cello for me...and the Star Wars theme for those lovely geeks. We are even having a Star Wars themed visit with nephew M and niece N today. ML has plans to make Princess Leila and Storm Troopers Cupcakes with them. lol. And no doubt there maybe a movie watched at some point.

So I give myself over to this geek holiday and I will roll my eyes on many occasions lol but I will be right here in the middle of it watching those I love celebrate.

Wish someone had told me that back in the day..lol.
Thanks for stopping by and I hope your Fourth celebrations are going well..and if you are trying to hide from them...I'll be back tomorrow with a Brunch posting.

Breathe? Yes I must remember to do that!...

Help? I need to remember to breathe right now. I've been on an emotional roller coaster over the last couple of weeks. It hasn't all been bad as I had a splendid time celebrating a good pals birthday on Saturday night. But on the whole its been...erm...a bitch...interesting times.

And as I didn't have a food posting ready to publish I thought I would make a visual reminder for myself...to simply breathe. So please indulge me...lol. Food blogs will return in a couple of days.

Simple eh?
I loved this poster because I found it very simple in its message and thought it very clever in design.

Anna Nalick ~ Breathe (2am)
This song is great and in particular this version because the talented Ms Nalick is singing live with just a guy playing guitar. And the lyric tells a tale I am all to familiar with...that whole stressing in the middle of the night and the friends simple advice to just...Breathe. First thing I tell my loved ones to do..and the last thing I remember to do myself these days.

A fair question...
Now this changes on a daily basis...which is at times bearable and at others desperate. If you have been to this place...then you will know. Eh? But either way I am grateful to be here.

Pearl Jam ~ Just Breathe
Again another live performance...this song is both beautiful and tragic. But the message is still the same....just breathe.

A reminder...
For when it is feeling impossible and feels like there is no way through...and I believe this quote to be very true.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope your Monday has been a good one...

For me...this week has been tough. But there have been moments where I've smiled and discovered words of comfort, music that has made me feel high and miscellaneous things that have given me something to look forward to. And as I haven't a food posting to share I thought I would share a few of these things that have kept me this side of sane moments with you. lol.

*taking a breath*
I need Yoga and its philosophies in my life. But I physically haven't been able to do any form of real practice for over a year now and it's hurting me. I had also forgotten that I still have an important part of it all open to me...the breath in my ravaged body...and the mental focus. And this simple poster reminded me and it had quite a powerful effect on me.

Such a great name for a recipe!
I came across this recipe on Pinterest and the recipe name actually made me smile and even chuckle. Serendipity is one of my favourite words so to see it used in such an awesome way and with a recipe that I can't wait to try I Pinned it to my For The Love of Vegan Food board straight away. So thanks to www.dietdessertndogs.com for the smiles...and I can't wait to try the recipe out.

Airbourne ~ Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast
Well...how happy was I when I stumbled upon these guys. If you like AC/DC then you will almost definitely enjoy them. They are an Aussie rock band that are unashamedly rock and just so good. I was on a music high for hours after listening to as much of their music that I could access on YT. They reminded me why I am the rock chick that I am. And yes some of their songs are Cert 18 but you can be a feminist and enjoy great rock music too!

Breaking Dawn part 2
SPOILER ALERT!!!
If you haven't seen it yet...scoot down to the next item!
It was recently our anniversary and my sister snuck in a belated present. The Breaking Dawn part 2 DVD. So ML and I finally sat down to watch the end of the series. I never got around to reading Breaking Dawn so the last movie and this one was a mystery to me.  So what did I think? Well firstly can I just say....CGI baby/children faces? With the budget they would've had to make this movie...I felt it could've been a lot better. In fact it freaked the bejesus out of me and it just wasn't convincing at all. Such a shame. And the whole film felt really rushed...but then when you split a book into two movies then I guess something has to give.

However...I did love the introduction of all the new characters, the mystery of Alice & Jasper's departure (ML aka Alice junkie..said That it was obvious Alice was going to save the day...lol *eyeroll*), the battle scene was righteous, the frustrating sudden twist in the story and did I mention there were vampires and werewolves? lol. But one thing that both of us liked and respected was that instead of a list of cast...at the end of the movie they went back to the beginning of the series and every character was given a face and actors name. Nice touch.

Total rock and roll, eh? lol
Rock n Roll or what? lol. We found these little beauts on a recent crawl around a shop. I did resist buying some as I don't get on with earbud earphones...but they did make me smile.

Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts ~ Hold You
When I first heard the growly voice of Crowe I knew I was a gonna like the Grunts..lol The songs are great and I have enjoyed the one album I have. This song in particular and it seems to have popped up on my play list on my Pod a few times this week. Making me both smile and think lol. Dammit..lol

J.R.Ward *bowing*
One of my favourite authors J.R.Ward is about to release the latest in her Black Dagger Brotherhood series. They are pure escapism for me. When I need the world to shut the hell up and music isn't doing it...I can take one of her books from my shelves and disappear between the covers.

But this one is very special hence the clue in the title, Lover At Last is the story of two regular characters Quinn & Blay. The Brotherhood are warriors and throughout the series, one of the brothers story is told...and in the background has always been these two characters story of fighting their love for each other.

And from what fans are told..the powers that be were not happy for them to have a book to tell their story...until now. I know that when this comes out in paperback I shall lock myself away for two days and revel in the highs and lows of their story. Because all the BDB fans have waited such a long time for this. It's gonna get bloody...it's no doubt gonna make me cry at times...and there will be many laughs and I cannot wait. So I shall be marking the days off until it's released here...something to look forward too.

Holly Williams ~ Three Days in Bed
This week I found Holly Williams. And yes she is indeed the granddaughter of Hank Williams. Her music is at times emotive, dragging you back to places in your past. Other times light and you feel your heart lift with hers. And everything in between those places. She tells beautiful stories with her song writing and her voice is both enchanting and gritty...for me that's a great thing. I have enjoyed listening to two of her albums this week and very happy I found her music..whilst searching for something completely different entirely..lol.

I need this cookbook for my collection..lol
I collect cookbooks...this you know, right? And when this one was released I knew I wanted...no..needed it. lol. I made a decision to do a long running review on my blog. Starting at the beginning of the book with recipe one and work my way through them all..giving over one day a week of the blog to this. I've seen many people's reviews and the photos of their efforts and enjoyed them. So when I do pick up a copy I shall be joining the masses in this sandwich making fun.

Wise words
This has been my mantra this week...however, it does work most of the time...but even this rain loving freak is getting really fed up with being sodden everyday. Oh well..whilst it's raining on me it's leaving someone else alone, eh?

I am no lover or supporter of guns. But when this came through on VeganCartoons feed this week it really did make me laugh. The right to hunt and the fur trade make me crazy angry and saddens me. But this makes a great point in a funny way. Loved it....

Thanks for stopping by...and I hope our Friday is a fantastic one..

ML is deep in birthday cake making...so I will be back tomorrow with the latest creation for our little niece Noo...who is turning 4 but acts 14! Urgh..where on earth is the time going? lol.

Music Loves: The Union ~ The World Is Yours Album

Rocket & Roses HQ Play List:

The Union ~ Sawtooth Mountain Ride part 1
The Union ~ You're My Jesus
The Union ~ Tonight I'm Alive
The Union ~ Fading Out Of Love
The Union ~ The World Is Yours
The Union ~ To Say Goodbye
The Union ~ The Perfect Crime
The Union ~ Tangled Up In You
The Union ~ Lost To The Wind
The Union ~ What Doesn't Kill You
The Union ~ Marie Celeste
The Union ~ Wreck My Scene
The Union ~ This Is A London Song
The Union ~ You Can Share My Dreams
The Union ~ Sawtooth Mountain Ride part 2

(Yep listening to the album as I type..lol I got it bad..)

I have mentioned and blogged about the talented Mr Luke Morley many times before. I have been a fan of his music for over 20 years. From the early days of Terraplane...the glorious days of Thunder (classic performance)...the Bowes & Morley days and the solo days El Gringo Retro...through to The Union days which are still going strong. Although Thunder seem to be making more appearances recently lol. Never a bad thing at all.

As the main writer/creative force behind the great British rock band that was Thunder..Morley was happy to share the responsibility with Pete Shoulder when Thunder had their final tour and he went on to form The Union ( Hmmm? Wasn't final for long..but hey I enjoyed every heartbreaking moment of that tour..lol) Anyway...

The Union ~ The World Is Yours
You're My Jesus ~ Live in Manchester

If you like bluesy rock...with great lyrics..great hooks..albums that lift you from moments of tearful heartbreak to balls to the wall rock/blues the next..then I can't urge you strongly enough to check them out. I remember listening nervously to the first demo that was released from their first album self titled The Union. As the first sounds came through my laptop speakers...I nearly cried with relief..because I loved it in that rough form. In fact if I'm honest I prefer that version, to the one that ended up on the album.

The Union ~ The Union
Black Monday

Why did I nearly cry with relief I hear you ask? Simply this...I understood Thunder...Morley's writing and Danny's voice...were for me...awesome. I have so many memories attached to those guys it's crazy...but not in a mad groupie fanatical way. I just respected the hell out of them. I didn't like every song they ever released and I accepted they weren't to everyone's taste but for me...perfect. So when it was announced that Morley was forming a new band I had a natural...Oh hell will i like this? moment. So it was a great moment when I first heard Shoulders captivating voice...the song Easy Street actually made me shiver..lol. And the exquisite Lilies...

I went to see them in Manchester when they toured for the release of The Union album and it was a fantastic night..one I will never forget. When they released the second album Siren's Song I had tickets for York and made it there and stood patiently waiting for them to come on..however half way through their first song...my body decided to give out on me. ML had to help me up and steer me out through the crowd. Not my finest moment..I knew I was too ill to go but hey...rock chick till I die..lol. So I missed that tour but I loved the second album as much as the first. I get lost in Cut The Line and get fired up to Burning Daylight every track on the first two albums are all great..no weak album fillers on either.

The Union ~ Siren's Song
Obsession
As you know I've been unwell (flipping understatement eh?) and as a treat to make me smile my much loved sister bought me the third album the week it was released. This album I had been patiently waiting to be released and was beyond excited when my sister walked through my lounge door waving it in her hand..."It's here!..." And blimey did I ever smile...lol. It was opened and the disc slotted into Ruby (laptop..hush! lol) and I sat and listened to every tune to the end. And then repeated this...(which was a blessing because the pain was very bad and it helped distract me)...and then once more. I added it to my iPod and then sat with the CD sleeve and read it cover to cover...taking in every word of the lyrics. Did I mention I'm a bit of a fan??? lol

The Union
Left ~ Mr Luke Morley Right ~ Mr Pete Shoulder
Tonight I'm Alive ~ Live in Manchester

I haven't formed any favourites on The World Is Yours as yet...I like to take my time and get to know each track so over the coming weeks I will listen to the album quietly in my moments of reflection...loudly on the days when I need the release that music brings me...and in the background whilst every lyric and melody becomes a part of me. I mentioned before that music is my life force haven't I? lol. This I know...the lyric and music are, as ever, of a high quality and creatively awesome. These guys do know how to write an album....that is for sure.

If you were wondering where you'd seen the artwork for The World Is Yours...then here is the full painting.

Now if only I could remember who painted it?
Feel free to pass me the information and I will
update the posting.

As I'm writing Fading Out of Love is playing in the background and it is a tale of doubt and heart break. Sung perfectly by Pete..the emotion he puts into every word is breathtaking.

Their albums are available at all the normal online places..Amazon, iTunes etc. But here is a link through to their website for you to have a look around..should you wish...you really should you know..lol.

Thanks for stopping by and letting me tell you about The Union. I hope your weekend is being very good to you...

And last but by no means least...Thank you lovely sister of mine for wanting to make me smile and doing it in such a perfect way..xx

~Red~

NB: I take absolutely no credit whatsoever for any of the creative genius for any of the music used in this posting. That is firmly in the hands of Morley and Shoulder. But I do thank them for every bit. I am always happy to share the music love....Thank you ~Red~

Happy Friday one and all! I haven't done one of these posts for a while and as I didn't have a foodie post to write for today, I thought why not do a mash up of things? lol. So I hope it entertains you for a little while. Would be happy to hear what your 'moments' would be...

Thought of the Week

OK...I know it's a little sappy but regardless, it is very true. And I have experienced this a few times this week.

Yum of the Week

This is guest blogger Trustworthy's Boost with Bite scramble. He served this tofu scramble over ciabatta bread this week for his breakfast and sent me a photo. I have been enjoying tofu fritattas for breakfast this week and it was nice to see the lovely man was enjoying a tofu yum fest too! Hopefully he will be writing a post about it very soon...

Movie of the Week

Trustworthy and I usually meet up on a Saturday afternoon and have an international movie moment. lol. This week we had a midweek moment and I finally watched As Good As It Gets. And Trustworthy was right about this movie. It had great acting..many laugh out loud moments and a great story.

Happy Moment of the Week

Regular readers of my little blog will be aware that ML spends a portion of working life travelling around Europe. This week ML has been in Brussels, Belgium and not been well either, with the Salicylate and Nickel condition. So my happy moment was when a very sadly ravaged ML walked in the door and promptly fell asleep on the bed.

Smiles of the Week

There once was a girl who had a little curl, right in the middle of her forehead. And when she was good, she was very, very good. But when she was bad..she was horrid. No wait!!! That's another story! lol. Ooops.

OK so there was once a baby girl born in a maternity ward that was filled with baby boys. She was this little bundle of curly blonde hair, little pink lips and cute as a button. But she had parents who could not decide upon her name..so the enamoured nurses and midwives started calling her Cherub until her actual name was decided. Yep, that bundle was indeed me...and although my parents did give me an actual name..my Mum called me Cherub for many years after. So I've always had this tie to the little Cherub..especially Cheeky Cherubs...and when i saw this Bert and Ernie style Cherubs..it made me smile so much.

Tune of the Week

I was sat chatting with a mate this week when this tune played on my iPod. Music is very emotive for me. And as the first few bars started to play I was taken back to a moment in my past when a good friend had sent me this tune. I won't share the whys or what for's..but the tune has been playing in my head ever since. And it's a very bittersweet feeling. Do you ever get tunes like that?

Truthful Moment of the Week

Right..bummer, eh? But it doesn't make it any less true for me and no doubt many other thousands of people who are dealing with chronic long term illness every day of their lives. This week has been quite a bad one and on one day this week this quote summed up my feelings eloquently. Thankfully these lows do pass...but at the time...you really doubt it. This is my truth...

TV Moment of the Week

How happy was I when The Killing Season 2 came through the post box this week. I am very addicted to this Danish drama. The acting and story lines are first class. And I confess I am desperate to learn Danish now because I love the sound of it. I have learnt Thank you...but that's it so far. I know some people run screaming from anything subtitled but not me...I love it.

Art of the Week

'Windswept' Artist unknown.
I found this piece during a visit to Pinterest. I cannot find the artist responsible for this beautiful creation but I wish I could because I have a feeling I would love their other works too. I love the use of the colours and graceful lines. I am enchanted with this piece. And if you recognise this and know who the artist is..please drop me a line so I can give credit where it's due.

Live Music Memory of the Week

Thunder ~ Until My Dying Day
I could fill a Tumbler with images of the memories I have attached to this gig..this band..and this song. For me..it's rock heaven.

Reclaimed Happiness of the Week

When you are on enforced rest..and very bad at it...you find yourself easily going stir crazy..and suffering from bitch cabin fever. So I spend a lot of time listening to music, watching music, watching movies, TV shows and reading. Yesterday afternoon whilst cruising my iPod I found that I had 30 Pod cast plays to listen too. Something I used to do whilst cooking....and so got comfy and started to listen to one. And I had forgotten how much it relaxed me. I won't forget again...lol. Sad how something that makes you so happy can just be forgotten..

And finally...yes...you're right...it's the tattoo moment..lol

Tattoo of the Week

Not for everyone...but I loved the placement, the black and grey mix and the beauty of the design.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope your Friday is an awesome one and sets your weekend up well for you..
